Materials and manufacturing of fiber drums

2020-10-27

Materials Used in Fiber Drums:

  1. Primary Material:

    • Made from  fibreboard, often derived from recycled sources .
    • Some variants use Kraft board (strong paper from softwood pulp) .
    • Densities vary: low-density (LDF), medium-density (MDF), or high-density (HDF) fiberboard .
  2. Protective Layers:

    • May include coatings like bitumen, waxed kraft paper, metal foil, or plastics (e.g., polyethylene) for moisture/chemical resistance .
  3. Lids/Bases:

    • Constructed from metal (steel rims), plastic, plywood, or additional fibreboard .

Manufacturing Process:

  1. Forming the Body:

    • Large rolls of paper/fibreboard are unwound and spirally wound around a cylinder using adhesive (glue), typically in 7 layers .
    • The glued cylinder is dried to solidify before cutting into required lengths (e.g., 4-foot segments) .
  2. Adding Structural Components:

    • Metal lever clamps or steel rims are shaped into ovals and welded onto the drum ends .
    • Lids/bases are attached via clamping rings or adhesive .
  3. Lining & Customization:

    • Inner linings (e.g., polyethylene for liquids; silicone for adhesives) are bonded to sidewalls .
    • Optional features: UN-rated designs (for hazardous materials).
